My best recommendation for you would be to go to a local department store's makeup counter and ask for them to do it for you, and ask that they explain how they're doing it as well. It's typically free, and you would get professional advice and instruction.
Applying in an upward motion gives you that drag look. I'm sure you don't want that. And applying the blush directly on the apples of your cheeks also gives you a drag look.
Instead you start at the temples and work your way down. Blush is not supposed to be something that's visible, so if you see a noticeable difference, then you're applying too much. Use a bronzer in your skin tone range rather than a blush. They look more natural.

apply blusher at ur cheeks starting from ur appels (( smile to find 'em )) .. tell they way up to ur cheek bones ..
DONT go too HEAVY .. so u dont look like a doll ..
